Taking up chess again

After five years of absence, I have been to the club again. I intend to pick up playing regularly again. I have decided to learn a new opening repertoire to refresh my look on the game. I have played the polar bear for years, but I had always troubles with the diagonal a7 g1. When black takes an early control over that diagonal I don't trust the position.

I decided to take up the London system. I really think that opening has been waiting for me all along. I ordered a book to get me started. Further I discovered the videos of ginger_gm (hat tip to Aox) and I really like how he treats the London. I think this might be the system for me to play the rest of my life. Its perfectly suited for my temperament. And what is more, I understand what I try to accomplish in the opening, for the first time. Well, that's not quite true. I did understand the polar bear reasonably well,  but I always had the feeling that the positions tended to be a bit too overstretched to my liking.

For black I played the Black Lion for years. But when white adopts the setup d4 e4 f4, I have the feeling that blacks plans fail. I don't like that feeling.

So either I should look for a method to fix blacks problems, or I can take up another defense.

I like to play the hedgehog type of positions that arises from the black lion, so I'm going to have a look at the hippopotamus defense. I'm not sure already if that will be the perfect opening for me since I know too little about it, but at first sight it looks suited for me.

What I actually need is a kind of a London system for black, but I don't know if that exists.

In fact I'm anticipating on the success of the tactical learning system that we are developing. But since all signs seem to point in the same direction, I hope that it is only a matter of time before we find the last missing piece of the puzzle . Wouldn't it be nice to be ready in case that happens? My tournament play has become very rusty due to my absence.

The London System for Black is called the Baltic Defense. It begins (without transposition) 1. d4 d4 2. c4 Bf5.

There are YouTube videos about it, including one where a National Master analyzes a simul game between Kasparov and a 1900+ player with Black. Needless to say, the Black player got slaughtered.

I found this blurb for a DVD:

Foxy DVD Series – Vol 89 – IM Andrew Martin

If you are tired of suffering on the black side of the Queen’s Gambit, the Baltic Defense can change all of that!

    1. d4 d5 2. c4 Bf5!? offers active and unusual play which your typical Queen’s Gambiteer won’t be familiar with and will force White to immediately change their plans.

Grandmaster Rausis [FIDE 2523] and Miladinovic [FIDE 2576] use this exciting counter-attack frequently with good results.

With this opening, Black plays for the initiative from the word go! The Baltic Defense is as off-beat as it gets against the Queen’s Gambit and is an ideal weapon for the club and tournament player.

If a couple of GMs play it, then you can find some games to figure out the best (main) lines.

    Chess Tempo Database gives 1. d4 d5 2. c4 Bf5 stats as: White wins 45.2% / Draw 35.7% / Black wins 19%. There are 820 games in the database.

The odds for Black winning are about the same for 2. ...c6 (19.5%), 2. ...e6 (20.5%) and 2. ... dxc4 (20.6%), but the draw odds increase by about 10%.

You pay your money and take your chances.

DISCLAIMER: I have no experience with this opening from either side, but I'm dubious about this system above club level UNLESS you are thoroughly prepared as Black and you can catch the White player off guard. However, given the capability of the current chess engines, I wouldn't be surprised if there are some lines that allow Black to survive, if not gain an advantage. Strong engines show that there are incredible resources in positions, as Stockfish 10 demonstrated in Aox's recent problem with the move 1. ... Be8 instead of the "natural" 1. ... Bxe6.

Is there anything we can do to help you prepare to resume your chess battles OTB?

Ehmm, I meant that metaphorically. I mean a system that is playable against most openings moves, that is solid, that requires understanding, not knowledge of variations until move 27, that is not likely to be busted anytime soon since it is based on solid principles.

Maybe you guys can. I haven't played chess on the internet for five years now, and other platforms seem to have emerged. What are the best platforms now to play internet chess?

    1. I assume I must have another look at the Caro Kann. I never understood what that opening was about, but I now see some similarities with the London System.

  3. There are a lot of places at Internet you can play chess. However if you want to make real progress you have to play against proper opposition (opponents) and analyse the flaws (mistakes) in the game. In additon you have to play longer games. The majority of games at Internet are played up to 5 minutes (90%), 5-10 minutes (9), a only 1-2% of all games are played at the rate od 30 minutes per player or more.

I have been playing at FICS (used BabasChess as Interface) TeamLeague. It is a very good place as you can find any opponents you wish (especially if you are under 2300-2400).

As far as I know there is a similiar league at Lichess. You can find out more info here: https://lichess.org/team/lichess4545-league

I think this way you can test your skills and see how you can manage the improvement process :). Good luck my friend!

  4. A word of warning. The London is a lot about using simple tactics to win a pawn, and then convert an endgame. It's hardly the grand-daddy of tactical openings, more like the grand-baby.

    1. I have played gambits only for 7 years in a row. It is time to learn some decent chess now. Even openings that have the smell of dead fish hanging around them tend to explode into a ferocious attack in my hands. In 18 years I have hardly reached an endgame. For years my games had an average of 23 moves. As where my fellow club mates average at 33. The quieter the opening is, the more chance I play a solid game in stead of entering a wild kamikaze attack. My banzai needs a little bonsai.
